Welcome back. In this post, I’ll be talking about the most popular hair color trends in 2017. I have colored my hair thrice and have reached to the conclusion that a different hair color can completely transform your look. I remember how awful was my first time when I went to the salon. I chose the color from the palette and I was so nervous and my nightmare came true. It didn’t suit me. The color I chose was just not complementing my skin tone and my eye color. I didn’t think about going back to the salon for a very long time but one fine day, I thought of taking a risk. I went to a very reputed salon and it was worth it. I was extremely happy with the results and became much more confident every time I went for a hair color because then I knew that what suits my complexion the most.
In this post, I am writing about everything that helped me to achieve the perfect hair color. I hope it helps you too. Let’s start now:
Do you know?
You hair is made of keratin and it’s not the only pigment in your hair. It also contains a pigment called melanocyte. It is formed by the cells. This pigment is further divided into two parts called lighter and dark pigment and that decides what hair color you are going to have.
How hair color works?
The cuticle protects your hair from the damage. It needs to be opened to let the hair color penetrate inside. For that purpose, the ammonia is used by most of the brands. There are also brands that sell ammonia free hair colors. They use an alternative called MEA that gently opens up the hair shaft.
What is a developer:
Developer is used to lighten the color and it also opens the cuticle so that the hair color can penetrate. Most brands use hydrogen peroxide as a developer.
Types of hair dyes:
Temporary hair dyes: They don’t penetrate into the hair shaft and are easily washed off.
Semi-permanent dyes: They contain smaller molecules and they also penetrate the hair shaft.
Permanent dyes: They are the most harsh ones and they break the cuticle.
I want to tell you something important about hair color before I talk about the most trending hair colors. I was confused as well. You will definitely look great but there will be some damage of course since you are using chemicals on your hair but what best we can do on our end is to minimize that damage by using the right products and taking extra care of your hair and diet. I have gone through several chemical treatments. I believe I did torture my hair by experimenting every new trend but I have taken the best care of my hair and that’s what you have to do before going for a hair color.
Let’s talk about the most popular hair trends in 2017.
Balayage: It is a technique used for highlighting your hair in the most natural way.
- In this technique, the lighter strands are highlighted where your hair will catch the light because that’s where you want your highlights to show.
- It is done in a vertical pattern.
- It’s a low maintenance technique.
- It doesn’t require regular touch ups.
- It gives you sun kissed highlights.
- No bleach is used.
- It’s perfect for the people who want a very slight change and not a drastic one.
- It is more subtle.
- There is less damage.
- It’s a technique, not an outcome.
Ombre: The color fades from a darker, natural hair at the roots to a lighter shade at the ends. It’s been so long since this trend is rocking but there are more variations now that look more natural and subtle.
- In this, 2-3 colors are used to blend the color and to avoid the harsh lines.
- It has a horizontal pattern.
- It depends on your choice, you can go for subtle colors or the loud ones.
- It is one of the hottest hair color trend.
- It’s an outcome and not a technique.
Tight eye coloring:
- This technique adds warmth and dimension to your hair and is best for the winters because in winters, your skin looks dull so it adds richness to your skin.
- It has pattern of gold, bronze and dark brown stripes.
- It gives depth to your hair color.
Now let’s talk about the things to remember while coloring your hair:
Knowledge about your skin tone and eye color: You should choose a hair color that goes with your skin tone and your eye color. What works best for brown eyes might not work for black eyes. This really makes a difference and is the most important factor to consider while selecting a perfect hair color.
Clear your doubts with your stylist: I use to pen down the doubts the day before my appointment. You don’t have to irritate him by asking useless questions. Just ask him questions like this that what’s my hair type, what’s the volume that you will be using for the developer, what’s the best products for the color treated hair etc. Play smart and this will send a good impression and he will be more careful while doing your hair color.
Avoid big chunks of bleach. It looks really washed out and cheap so definitely avoid getting big chunks.
Do not wash your hair before the treatment: It’s advisable that it’s best to wash your hair 24 hours before because your natural oils in the hair will give a protection to you hair.
Use the right products: It’s so important to use the right products like using a sulfate free shampoo is must and use the moisture rich conditioners because hair color can dry your hair.
Hair whitening myth: Most of us believed that hair color can whiten your hair and it can cause hair damage. It’s a myth. Hair whitening is genetic and occurs due to other reasons like deficiency of Vitamin B and thyroid problem.
Use more than one color: If you are using a single color, it will give you a flat and one dimension look and will not look natural. Ask your stylist to use more than one color for a beautiful dimension.
